  • Member of Organisation for Appropriate Social Services in South Africa (OASSSA.). (1986-1990) OASSSA a broad based professional mental health organisation was constituted in the mid 1980’s. It was formed in opposition to the Psychological Association of South Africa (PASA), which had, over the years, offered open and tacit support for South Africa’s apartheid policies. O.A.S.S.S.A. defined for itself a broad agenda: addressing issues of mental health policy, lobbying for human rights issues (particularly those related to mental health), theorising the psychological consequences of living under apartheid and developing models of treatment for those subject to the violent repression of the time. I was involved in various capacities: conducting research for the trade unions, counselling individuals who had been detained for their suspected involvement in political organisations, developing a model for managing treatment of post-traumatic stress in a South African context, producing a monthly newsletter, training lay counsellors etc. During 1987, I served on the executive committee.

  • Trainer on Emergency Services Group South Africa (ESG) 1986-1988. South Africa in the mid 1980’s were a period of violent state repression in the form of the various States of Emergency. This was a time when both political activists and ordinary township residents suffered, inter alia, police brutality. The psychology group within E.S.G. sought to develop various self-help (treatment) models to assist individuals suffering under the extreme psychological stress and trauma of this period. I was involved in this process, amongst other things, training lay counsellors.

I have practiced as a clinical psychologist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist for over three decades. Hailing from Johannesburg, my earliest clinical work was in a variety of anti-apartheid psychological service organisations. Subsequently in South Africa, I worked in private practice over many years. South Africa, until very recently, did not have a Psychoanalytic Training Institute. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy scholarship, nonetheless flourished in universities and in organisations like the Johannesburg Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Group (JPPG).  The JPPG, with its neo-Kleinian orientation was foundational in my interest in the field.

I have long been involved in the training of mental health professionals - be it in tertiary education institutions or through a various supervisory contexts. My academic career in Perth commenced in the School of Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Western Australia. From 2006-2020, besides running a small private practice, I headed up the Counselling and Psychotherapy Programmes at Edith Cowan University.

For me, one of the biggest adjustments to an Antipodean professional life has been the extent to which the hegemonic CBT, scientist-practitioner sensibility frames the context in which clinicians work. I, notwithstanding, hold strongly to the view that a psychoanalytic approach has much to offer 21st century West Australians; be it a compelling ways to consider our most private selves or innovations in short-term evidence-based forms of psychoanalytic practice (e.g. Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy/Mentalisation based treatment), amongst other things. Currently, I am a candidate with the Sydney Institute of Psychoanalysis  a branch of the Australian Psychoanalytical Society (APAS) a component society of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA).

I hold a number of professional memberships with national and international clinical psychology and psychoanalytic psychotherapy societies/organisations. All of these memberships are restricted to clinical members with specialist training, qualifications and experience. These memberships attest to high level clinical competencies relevant to my capacity to practice, train and supervise mental health professionals.
